Hiring an electrician in Calgary

CCT 01A compulsory trade with a long apprenticeship

Electrician is a 4-period apprenticeship trade with compulsory certification in Alberta.¹ In a compulsory trade, the restricted activities can only be done by a certified journeyperson, a registered apprentice working under a certified journeyperson's supervision, or someone holding a recognized certificate.² An apprentice on your job is normal and legal. An unsupervised helper who is neither is not.

The apprenticeship is substantial. Periods 1 and 2 each require 1,560 hours of work experience and 8 weeks of classroom instruction;¹ periods 3 and 4 each require 1,500 hours and 10 weeks.¹ That adds up to 6,120 hours on the job and 36 weeks in class.¹ Apprentices must be paid at least 50%, 60%, 70% and 80% of the journeyperson rate across the four periods,¹ which is one reason a crew with an apprentice can price labour differently from a crew of two journeypersons.

Experienced workers without an Alberta certificate can qualify through the Trades Qualifier route, with 72 months and 9,180 hours of verifiable electrician experience plus a theory exam.¹ The Red Seal trade is Construction Electrician (NOC 72200), called "Electrician" in Alberta,³ so a Red Seal endorsement on an Alberta certificate is a mark of the national standard, not a separate licence.

CCT 02Journeyperson, master electrician and contractor

A journeyperson certificate says a person is qualified to do the work. A master electrician certificate says a person may take responsibility for it in front of the permit system. In Alberta, master electricians certified by the Safety Codes Council are the only contractors who can obtain electrical permits.⁴

The bar is higher than the trade ticket. A master electrician needs an electrician trade certificate, at least 3 years of relevant experience in the 5 years before applying, the fee, and a pass on the approved exam.⁵ Passing means 60% or more on each part and a 75% average across both parts.⁶ Masters also had to complete mandatory 2024 Canadian Electrical Code update training by April 1, 2025 to keep their certificates,⁷ so a current master has been trained on the code in force now (see the electrical code in Alberta).

In practice, a small shop is often one master electrician and a few journeypersons and apprentices. The person on your ladder does not need to be the master; the company pulling the permit does need one.

CCT 03How to check credentials in Alberta and Calgary

1. The tradesperson. Alberta's Tradesperson Lookup Tool lets anyone verify whether a person is a registered apprentice or holds an Alberta-issued certificate. It needs a first name, last name and a certificate or AIT ID, and it cannot check credentials from other provinces.⁸ Ask for the certificate number; a real tradesperson will give it.
2. The master electrician. The Safety Codes Council provides a public Master Electrician Search on its Council Connect site.⁹ Search the name of the master the company says will hold your permit.
3. The Calgary registrations. To apply for a City electrical permit, a contractor must meet 3 requirements: hold an Alberta Master Electrician Certificate, have a City of Calgary business licence, and complete the City Qualified Trade application process.¹⁰ A new City Contractor business licence is $330 under the 2026 schedule, or $248 to renew.¹¹

If a company cannot name its master electrician, or suggests that you pull a homeowner permit for work it will do, stop there. Homeowner permits are for owners doing their own work in the home they live in, and exclude the service, panel, EV charging and solar entirely (see the homeowner permit guide). CCT 04Insurance and WCB: the questions to ask

A certificate proves competence. It does not pay for a flooded basement from a drilled pipe or an injured worker on your property. Ask every contractor on the shortlist these questions, and ask for the answers in writing:

• Liability insurance. Does the company carry commercial general liability insurance, with which insurer, and when does the policy expire? Ask for a certificate of insurance dated for the period of your job. For a condo or commercial space, ask whether the property manager needs to be named on it.
• WCB-Alberta. Does the company have a WCB-Alberta account for its workers, and will it provide a clearance letter showing the account is in good standing? Subcontractors should have their own.
• Who is on site. Will the work be done by the company's own journeypersons and apprentices, or subcontracted? If subcontracted, whose master electrician holds the permit?
• Warranty on workmanship. What is covered, for how long, and who responds if a breaker trips a month later?

Property managers and facility leads usually have a vendor package that covers all of this, and commercial work such as tenant improvements adds landlord requirements on top. Homeowners rarely ask, and the ones who do quickly learn which contractors keep their paperwork current.

CCT 05How to compare electrical quotes

Two quotes for "a 200 A upgrade" can describe different jobs. Line them up by scope before you compare totals.

The permit and inspections. The City's contractor permit is $112 plus $9.79 per $1,000 of construction value, plus the Safety Codes Council fee,¹² and construction value means labour plus material.¹² A quote should say the permit is included and who books the inspections. A City re-inspection is $327 if the first one fails,¹² so ask who pays for it.

The utility. Service work involves ENMAX Power. A quote for a panel or service change should say who submits the disconnect and reconnect request and whether any ENMAX charges are included (see ENMAX service connections and panel and service upgrades).

The finish. Is drywall patching, painting or stucco repair in the price, excluded, or left to you? This is the most common gap between a low and a high number on renovation work.

Rates, not wages. The median wage for electricians in the Calgary region is $40 an hour,¹³ but that is what the worker earns, not what a customer is billed. A billed rate also carries the vehicle, tools, insurance, WCB, permits, office and margin. For context on older quotes, Statistics Canada's electrical-trade price index for Calgary residential buildings rose 0.6% in the year to Q2 2026.¹⁴

CCT 06A quote checklist

A good written quote for residential or light commercial electrical work answers each of these. If yours does not, ask before you sign.

1. Company legal name, City business licence and the name of the master electrician who will hold the permit.
2. A scope written in equipment and locations: which circuits, how many devices, which panel, what size breaker or service.
3. Permit included, with the permit number to follow once it is issued.
4. Who books the rough-in and final inspections, and who pays for a re-inspection.
5. Utility coordination, for any job that touches the service or meter.
6. Materials: named brands or an allowance, and who supplies fixtures and chargers.
7. What is excluded: patching, painting, trenching, locates, hauling away old equipment.
8. Schedule, including how long the power will be off.
9. Payment terms tied to milestones, not a large deposit before the permit exists.
10. Insurance certificate and WCB clearance, as above.

The Calgary region recorded a labour shortage for electricians over 2023 to 2025,¹⁵ so well-run shops are often booked weeks ahead. A realistic start date from a qualified company is worth more than a fast one from someone who cannot show a certificate.
